"It is reality that awakens possibilities, and nothing would be more perverse than to deny it. Even so, it will always be the same possibilities, either in sum or on the average, that go on repeating themselves until a man comes along who does not value the actuality over the idea. It is he who first gives the new possibilities their meaning, their directions, and he awakens them."
- Robert Musil, The Man Without Qualities
"The truth will set you free. But not until it is done with you."
- David Foster Wallace
Why Intelligent People Drink More Alcohol | Psychology Today
“What’s important to note about the study is that both income and education, as well as childhood social class and parents’ education are controlled in multiple regression analyses of these data from the US and the UK. It means that it is not because more intelligent people occupy higher-paying, more important jobs that require them to socialize and drink with their business associates that they drink more alcohol. It appears to be their intelligence itself, rather than correlates of intelligence, that inclines them to drink more.”
The hypothesis behind this is that, since intelligent individuals are more likely to engage in evolutionarily novel behavior, and since alcohol is a novelty (within the past few thousand years is pretty novel in evolutionary terms), then you would expect intelligent people to drink more. Which is what the data from this study shows.
The word alcohol – al kohl – is Arabic in origin, like many other words that begin with “al,” like algebra, algorithm,...
