"It is reality that awakens possibilities, and nothing would be more perverse than to deny it. Even so, it will always be the same possibilities, either in sum or on the average, that go on repeating themselves until a man comes along who does not value the actuality over the idea. It is he who first gives the new possibilities their meaning, their directions, and he awakens them."
- Robert Musil, The Man Without Qualities
"The truth will set you free. But not until it is done with you."
- David Foster Wallace
“If you’re a subscriber to a pay dating site, you are an important (though unwitting) part of that site’s customer acquisition team. Of course, they don’t want to show you too many ghosts, because you’ll get frustrated and quit, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re relying on you - your messages are their marketing materials - to reach out to non-payers and convince them, by way of your charming, heartfelt messages, to pull out their credit cards. If only a tiny fraction of your message gets a response, hey, that’s okay, you’re working for free. Wait a second…you’re paying them.”
Even if, like me, you aren’t in the online dating thing, this blog is totally worth subscribing to. It’s like a bunch of math nerds start a dating site, and on this blog they use online dating data and do some math to show you all kinds of cool stuff. This one is pretty obvious (once they walk you through the math, that is), showing the screwy financial incentives that their competition has and how that affects the dating services. Follow the link and check out the entire article. Totally worth reading.
